We would like to call to your attention the following workshop in honor of Prof. James R. Houck (1940 - 2015):

SCIENCE ENABLED BY NOVEL INFRARED INSTRUMENTATION

The workshop will take place from June 25 - 28, 2017 at Cornell University, Ithaca (NY).

The workshop aims at highlighting the legacy of Jim Houck as an outstanding infrared astronomer who made contributions to wide range of topics in modern astronomy, captured by the main themes of the workshop:

  • The Spitzer/IRS legacy
  • Paving the road toward future infrared missions
  • Future perspectives of infrared spectroscopy
  • Infrared detector development
  • Development of key technologies for infrared astronomy

The program will reflect on the history of these themes, their future potential, and their close connection to the scientific discoveries that have been made with previous missions and the expectations on observatories of the future.

The workshop is intended for young students and postdocs who are interested in IR astronomy in general, and spectroscopy in particular, instrument builders, and the many friends and colleagues who appreciate the fundamental contributions that Jim has made to the development of the field of IR astronomy over the past 50 years.

We hope to see many of you in Ithaca in June.

On behalf of the SOC and LOC,

Bernhard Brandl and Gordon Stacey
